No math program is perfect for every child! One of the many benefits to
homeschooling is the ability to select curriculum based on your child's learning
style.
Saxon
Math is the #1 homeschool math program, it builds on itself (a
spiral approach) and reviews previous concepts to insure a solid foundation.
Saxon is available for grades K-12 and is a wonderful program.
Saxon does not introduce Algebraic calculators, you can purchase Key Math
Algebra for Calculators to cover this topic.
Miquon Math
= HANDS ON LEARNING FOR GRADES 1-3
This program is great for kids who like to see and feel what they learn!
It is easy to use and I love it!
For 30 years, the
Miquon Math
Materials have offered children a friendly
invitation to the world of mathematics. Based on the belief that mathematical
insight grows out of observation, investigation, and the discovery of patterns,
the six workbooks of the
Miquon Math
Materials lead children
through an exploration of mathematical relationships. Concrete models
are not supplements to the written work but instead are the basis of it and are
used
Singapore
Primary Math uses a visual and spiral approach. It does not review
previous concepts but builds on them. If your child is a visual learner,
and does not need constant reviews this is a great preK-7/8 math program.
It is much harder then grade level and level has complex problems that would
challenge most high school students. Singapore math is available for
pre K - 6 and 7 - 12.
Singapore math does have a 'new elementary' -(don't let the name fool you it
is actually middle-high school curriculum). It builds on Singapore Primary
math, but many people switch from Primary math to Saxon, Jacobs or High School
Math Teaching Text Books.
Key
Curriculum has a GREAT series called Keys to math. This
program can be used by the gifted student to zoom ahead, by the challenged child
to learn with everyday examples, or to reinforce a concepts your child is
struggling with. I know many people with gifted children who use this to
introduce math concepts to their children at an early age. I also know
quite a few parents of children who struggle in math who use this to allow their
child to master basic concepts. Keys to math can be used in grades
K-12.
Teaching Textbooks
was designed for homeschoolers by 2 Harvard math
teachers. It teaches the topics clearly using technology, so you don't
have to worry about trying to teach your high school child upper level math.
This program is great for anyone who is 'afraid' of teaching upper level high
school math to their child.
More information can be found about each of the math programs on our Grade
Level Specialized Math Curriculum Pages.
