Materials:

  • Old socks
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Items to decorate puppets: material scraps, buttons, yarn, google eyes, etc.
  • Permanent marker
  • Pumpkin
  • Pumpkin carving kit or carving knife
  • Large spoon
  • Large bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin, by Stan Berenstain

Language Arts/Math/Science/Art:

  • Read The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin, by Stan Berenstain. Discuss the following with your child.
    • What clues did the Bear Detectives use to find the pumpkin? (the wheelbarrow track, a pumpkin leaf, the first-prize ribbon, pumpkin seeds, a pumpkin smell)
    • Papa Bear and Snuff found things that were not the pumpkin thief. What did he find? (He found a cow, three pigs in a pigpen, a scarecrow in the field, a haystack, and a hen in a barn.)
    • What color is the first-prize ribbon? (It is blue.)
    • Count the number of lessons in the detective book. (four) Name them.
      • Lesson one: Look around for tracks on the ground.
      • Lesson two: Look for another clue.
      • Lesson three: Look before you leap.
      • Lesson four: Use your nose.
    • Where did the Bear Detectives find the pumpkin? (Mrs. Ben cooked it into a pie.)
  • Make sock puppets, and have the child retell the story.
    • Use socks and decorate them with material scraps, buttons, yarn, google eyes, etc.
  • Involve the child in pumpkin seed sensory play.
    • Have the child describe the feel of pumpkin seeds.
      • Draw a face on a pumpkin using a permanent marker.
      • Carve the pumpkin.
      • Have the child help pull the seeds out of the inside.
      • Ask, “What does it feel like to you?” Help the child use creative adjectives to describe the feeling (gooey, slimy, slippery, etc.)
  • Cook pumpkin seeds.
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 1/2 cups raw pumpkin seeds
      • 1/8 teaspoon salt
      • 2 teaspoons butter, melted
    • Directions:
      • Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
      • Toss the seeds in a bowl with salt and melted butter.
      • Spread the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Stir occasionally.

Music:

  • Explain to your child that another name for fall is autumn.
  • Sing “Autumn Leaves" to the tune of “London Bridge.”

Autumn leaves are falling down, falling down, falling down.

Autumn leaves are falling down all around us.

Use a rake and rake them up, rake them up, rake them up.

Use a rake and rake them up with your muscles.
