Reading Complete: Level B Overview

This self-paced reading program is designed to teach beginning readers and can supplement any curriculum. It combines phonics and sight word recognition skills to teach a child how to read fluently and expressively. Language arts skills of spelling, punctuation, grammar, handwriting, and reading comprehension are included.

The daily lessons incorporate the use of flashcards, games, activities, and independent written practice. Each lesson reviews the previous skills and introduces a new skill. This program is designed to be self-paced, and the child should master the lesson’s skills before moving on to the next lesson. The child will learn to read long vowel words, words with consonant blends, words with double vowels, words with prefixes and suffixes, contractions, and sight words within context.

  1. Recognize the symbols and sounds for individual letters and blends.
  2. Blend consonant sounds together with short vowel sounds.
  3. Read short vowel words.
  4. Blend consonant sounds together with long vowel sounds.
  5. Read long vowel words.
  6. Apply spelling and phonics concepts through written practice.
  7. Write sentences using proper spacing between letters.
  8. Develop left to right and top to bottom orientation.
  9. Recognize basic sight words.
  10. Recognize ordinal number words and apply them to daily experiences.
  11. Identify and use words that rhyme, start, or end with the same sound.
  12. Use word recognition skills and strategies to read and comprehend text.
  13. Understand literature written in a variety of genres.
  14. Develop listening comprehension and the ability to retell a story.
  15. Read orally with fluency and inflection.
  16. Write clearly and effectively.
  17. Understand that the names of people and places start with capital letters.
  18. Understand that a sentence ends with a punctuation mark.
  19. Understand that quotation marks are used to show the words someone has said.
  20. Understand how to use a period, question mark, exclamation mark, comma, and quotation marks in writing.
  21. Understand the difference between singular and plural words.
  22. Add a suffix to a word.
