Unit Study

Plants Unit Study for Kids (K–6)

What do your children really know about the plants growing all around them?
Have they ever wondered how a tiny seed becomes a towering tree—or why plants are so important to life on Earth?

Designed for Kindergarten through 6th grade, this unit combines hands-on learning, thoughtful discussion, and real-world observation to spark curiosity and deepen understanding. Through interactive activities, nature exploration, and creative projects, your children won’t just learn about plants—they’ll begin to see and appreciate the living world around them in a whole new way.

    • Discover what plants need to live and grow.
    • Plant seeds and observe growth.
    • Learn sight words.
    • Use play money to purchase flowers.
    • Measure and compare seed growth using a ruler.
    • Understand that humans and plants have needs to survive.
    • Label the parts of a plant and the flower.
    • Explain a hydrologic or water cycle.
    • Make a terrarium to demonstrate the process of a water cycle.
    • Create original art: fruit and vegetable prints.
    • Learn personal responsibility by caring for plants, creating a schedule, and managing plant health.

This Plants Unit Study goes beyond science by integrating all core subjects into one cohesive learning experience. Students will explore plant biology through science, measure and track growth using math, build reading and writing skills with language arts activities, and express creativity through art and music. The unit also incorporates social studies by examining the role of plants in cultures and communities, includes physical activity through outdoor exploration, and encourages character development through lessons in responsibility, patience, and appreciation for the natural world.
